This ill-tempered snake species makes its home around the fiery molten pits of the Burning Steppes.

Not bad! Not long at all after getting my Fel Flame (maybe an hour?) got my blue as a secondary to a grey AV NE of the Altar of Sha'tar (don't fly directly over that if you're Horde! ;) ).
Found my rare as a secondary to a grey ash viper in the Badlands. They don't seem to be too common as primary though, so I guess I got lucky.
Found two rares, one right after the other, as secondaries to Fel Flames at the eastren tip of the laval pool surrounding Hand of Gul'dan.
I was looking for a Fel Flame in Shadowmoon Valley, and I got an uncommon Ash Viper as a second. Unfortunately, I killed it by accident before I could add it to my collection, but two Fel Flames later I found a rare!
Believe it or not, but I found a level 1 common Ash Viper as I flew over SW towards Burning Steppes. It was found in a flat area in the mountains before you get to the more "finished" parts. I don't think I had crossed over at that point, but the snake does move.
first try found one, was a grey, but two of its buddies, one was a rare viper :)

I found three near the ruins of Thauressen (sp)
I'm not sure if it spawns or if its only a pet that joins the battle. I got it when I fought a cockroach and it was the second pet who joined the battle. I wasn't battling pets very long before it showed up.
