Patch 3.2 Is Here!

August 04, 2009
Patch 3.2 Is Here!
Patch 3.2 just went live and tons of new pets have been added! Here's a summary of all the new content for pet collectors:

But wait, there's more!
In addition to these 11 brand new pets, Patch 3.2 brings with it an optional change to two previous pets. For 150 Champion's Seals, you can purchase an Argent Pony Bridle to upgrade your Argent Gruntling or Argent Squire. Once upgraded, your little servant will now actually be able to serve you. Every 4 hours, he can grant you access to the bank, mailbox or a vendor for 3 minutes. Plus, whenever you mount up on a ground mount, he'll mount up on his adorable little pony!

NOTE: Equipping your squire or gruntling with this item does not make it count as a new pet.

Coming soon?
All of this new content should keep us pet collectors very busy for a long time. However, we will still be on the lookout for many more potential new pets that have not yet been implemented:

  • Calico Cat
  • Jade Tiger Cub (formerly Jade Panda Cub)
  • Macabre Marionette - possible pet available during new Day of the Dead event (November)
  • Onyx Panther
  • Plump Turkey - confirmed: reward for new Pilgrim's Bounty meta achievement (November)

Be sure to keep up with the latest pet collecting news right here.

New! Onyxia Brood Whelpling

August 13, 2009
It looks like WoW's 5th anniversary will bring us pet collectors another new pet, along with a revamped Onyxia raid:

She has lurked in her lair and done battle with the many brave adventurers who travelled to that familiar location over the years. Now, in honor of the World of Warcraft 5-year anniversary, the dreaded brood mother Onyxia is being revamped to make a return to the forefront of Azeroth, as part of our big plans for the upcoming 3.2.2 content patch.

This permanent update to Onyxia will convert the dungeon into 10- and 25-player modes. We will be adding new items to Onyxia’s loot table that have the same model as some of the classic loot from this dungeon, like Tier 2 helms, with stats updated to match the current level of content. There will be a special new item too: a normal drake-sized 310% speed flying mount modeled after Onyxia herself called Brood of Onyxia. We will also be updating the encounter mechanics to be more fitting for modern raiding, but we can guarantee players will get to experience the frightening horror of deep breaths once again.

Then for a limited time, after the 5-year anniversary event officially begins in November, anybody who logs in will receive an Onyxia Brood Whelpling pet.

Much like last year's Baby Blizzard Bear, this pet will be free to all who simply log in on the day of the event. We expect the event to begin around November 22nd. When that day gets closer, we'll post a reminder in our news section (not that you'll need one!)

Undocumented 3.2 Pet Changes

August 14, 2009
UPDATE: Here are some more recently discovered undocumented changes made in Patch 3.2:

Apparently Blizzard didn't just add a lot of new pets in Patch 3.2. They also made a number of undocumented pet-related changes:

  • Drop rates for the pet Crocolisks have increased significantly, possibly as high as 50%, or 1 in 2!
  • Mini Tyrael has a new idle animation where he falls asleep, tosses and turns, and scratches his backside. He even does a little enrage emote upon waking.
  • The Cobra Hatchling has a new summon animation where he slithers up from the ground.
  • Several pets have had their size increased, including the three vendored Snakes, the Cockroach, and the Jubling.
  • The Disgusting Oozeling now has a constant "disgusting aura" (rather than cycling on and off)

New Pets on PTR

August 15, 2009
UPDATE: The two Mini-Mounts, the Tuskarr Kite, and the Spectral Tiger Cub appear to be the three new loots for the upcoming WoW TCG series, Scourgewar. Landro Longshot lists them on the PTR, though they do not seem to be available to try out, yet.

According to MMO Champion some new potential pets were discovered on the PTR for patch 3.2.2. A couple of them appear to be mounts, but the fact that they are little and NOT fast could indicate a new type of pet that can be ridden for fun instead of travel. This is just speculation, but I hope it's true! Thank you Blizzard for continuing to feed our pet-collecting addictions.

  • Little White Stallion - Summons and dismisses a rideable little white stallion. This is NOT a fast mount.
  • Little Ivory Raptor - Summons and dismisses a rideable little ivory raptor. This is NOT a fast mount.
  • Tuskarr Kite - Right Click to summon and dismiss your kite.
  • Spectral Tiger Cub - Right Click to summon and dismiss your spectral tiger cub.

MMO Champion also found a model for the new Onyxia Brood Whelpling. Unfortunately, it looks just like the Dark Whelpling, though I'm confident that will change before its debut in November.

In other news, we've listed more undocumented changes for patch 3.2. Please check them out, and be sure to check back often for the latest WarcraftPets news!

BlizzCon 2009 Meet-and-Greet

August 18, 2009
BlizzCon 2009 is almost here! If any of you are half as excited as I am then... well, you're pretty darn excited!

Meet-and-Greet!
This year I'm fortunate enough to attend BlizzCon for the first time, and WarcraftPets creator Brian (a.k.a. Breanni) will be returning for a second year in a row. So we've decided to organize a meet-and-greet for members of the WarcraftPets community who are also attending BlizzCon!

Breanni: Pet Supplies
WHEN:    Friday, 3-4 PM
WHERE:  Realm Meetings section in Hall A

We welcome you to drop by and say hello. Plus you'll have a chance to meet other pet collectors from our online community! Look for Brian/Breanni sporting a dark "cartoon" Breanni <Pet Supplies> T-shirt (pictured). I, Melissa/Sateena, will be modeling my white "Got Whelp?" T-shirt. If you managed to get a shirt prior to the closing of the WarcraftPets Store, feel free to wear it in support of our little gathering.

Additionally, be sure to swing by the FigurePrints booth. They will have several different FigurePets on display, including a preview of some possible pets coming in Series 2.

Grunty Added
Grunty (the Murloc Marine) has been added to the site. Remember, it's not too late to order the Pay Per View coverage to score a Grunty of your very own.

We'll see you at BlizzCon!

Pet News from BlizzCon 2009

August 24, 2009
BlizzCon 2009 has come and gone and we return from Anaheim with a host of news for the pet collecting community.

WoW: Cataclysm announced
Cataclysm: What does it mean for older pets?
By now, everyone has heard about the next WoW expansion, Cataclysm. The old world consisting of Azeroth and Kalimdor will be drastically changing. The very nature of many zones will be forver altered. Some mobs will become extinct and new ones will take their place. So what does this mean for pet collectors?

In truth, we just don't know yet. But it seems reasonable to speculate that a few older pets, particularly some dropped pets found on old world mobs, may no longer be available after patch 4.0. We don't expect the patch for at least another 9-12 months, so collectors have plenty of time to grab those old school pets.

Grunty Attacks!
We've added the BlizzCon 2009 promotional pet Grunty to the site. This guy has a ton of sensational animations. One such animation can be seen whenever he is in close proximity to a Zergling—the two will fight to the death! From what I've seen, the victor is usually the one who was summoned first. Video »

Onyxian Whelpling
Onyxian Whelpling
Last week we reported on WoW's 5th Anniversary gift pet. We were disappointed to hear that it would likely share the same model as the Dark Whelpling. But a picture was captured during one of the panel discussions that confirms a stunning new model for this pet. Yay!

Speculation: New Racial Pets
As most collectors know, each race has its own set of vendored pets found near its starting area. BlizzCon gave me the chance to get a sneak peak at the new starting zones for the Goblin and Worgen races. While other sites have reported on the racials, classes, and the "feel" of these starting zones, I'll be sharing the pet collector's perspective. Keep in mind, this is pure speculation.

In Gilneas, the Worgen starting zone, I discovered new bulldog models which would make adorable companions for this race. These would be the first actual dog pets available to pet collectors (discounting the Worg Pup). On the Lost Isles, the Goblin starting zone, there were new Rhesus monkey models that would also make ideal pets. Only time will tell if Blizzard agrees (and let's hope they do!)

WoW Magazine
WoW Magazine
World of Warcraft: The Magazine debuted at BlizzCon, enticing attendees to be the first to sign up for this gorgeous and informative quarterly piece. Advertising-free, this publication will feature something for everyone: lore, behind-the-scenes, raiding and pvp tips, and a focus on the community. In fact, the first issue, slated for release late this fall, will examine the trend of collecting non-combat pets, exploring how these companions have become so popular with the player base.

Meet-and-Greet Fun
The first WarcraftPets meet-and-greet was a big success. Several fans, many of whom are site MVPs, joined me and Sateena to say hello and talk pets. My wife (and burgeoning publicist, lol) was on hand to take a few pics. Our sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to drop by. Your kind words and praise make our ongoing efforts to maintain and improve this site well worth the effort. We hope to see even more of you at BlizzCon 2010!

More BlizzCon 2009 News

August 26, 2009
Egbert in series 2?
My family and I just returned from our awesome trip to BlizzCon. Here is some additional pet-related news I have to report:

FigurePets
I visited the FigurePrints booth and talked with "the man", Ed Fries. He said the first series of FigurePets was well received and they are now gearing up for the release of Series 2. The new pets will be three of the following five: Egbert, Grunty, Muckbreath, Sleepy Willy, and Worg Pup. I hope they pick Egbert. He's one of my favorites!

Archaeology
With the Cataclysm expansion will come a new secondary skill, Archaeology. Like Fishing, Cooking, and First Aid, everyone will be able to learn this new skill. Players will be able to discover artifacts and conduct research to unlock various paths and items. These items may include new mini-pets, such as a fossilized baby dinosaur!

Engineering
The plans for Engineering in the next expansion are to get "back to its roots." This means more gadgets, toys, and mini-pets, with plenty of catastrophic backfiring to go along. Don't worry. Those of you who dropped engineering after making Lil' Smoky and Pet Bombling still have plenty of time to relevel it!

Kwurky the Murloc
OK, I admit this one is pure speculation... but one can always hope! The BlizzCon 2009 store introduced new baby murloc plushies for sale. These included Murky and Lurky. Additionally, a new green baby murloc plushy named Kwurky was given to attendees who signed up for a subscription to World of Warcraft: The Magazine. You can see my daughter holding all three plushies in this photo. Now is it such a stretch to assume, since the white and blue murloc plushies have in-game vanity pet counterparts, that the green one should as well? I sure hope Blizzard adds Kwurky as a 100 pet achievement reward. PLEASE? Oh and where the heck is the Gurky plushy?

Cataclysm: Removed Pets
As Breanni mentioned previously, with all the upheaval and change coming in the Cataclysm expansion, it is possible that some pets may become unavailable, particularly ones that drop from old world mobs. I would like to emphasize that we simply do not know which, if any, pets will be affected. Please rest assured that you still have plenty of time to collect these pets, as the expansion might not be released for another year or so.
