Patch 7.2 PTR: New Pet & Toy, Plus Pet Battle Dungeon Update

March 02, 2017
The latest 7.2 PTR patch included a new pet and fun toy, plus a Pet Battle Dungeon update. [source]

Going Batty
Orphaned Felbat
A new pet was added to the 7.2 PTR — Orphaned Felbat! (pictured right)

The Pet Journal currently lists this little bat as from a Legionfall Chest.

It's unclear if this chest will be a reward from the new Armies of Legionfall reputation emissary, or some other lootable item/object.

This pet is Bind On Pick Up, but is cageable.

We'll have more information on how to collect this pet as it becomes available. Hopefully this bat will get along with its cousins, the Firebat Pup and Felbat Pup.

Fly My Pretties!
Mages will have a fun new battle pet toy to look forward to in 7.2.

Magical Saucer toy
Upon completing the achievement Power Ascended (empower an artifact weapon and unlock every trait), Mages will be able to purchase a Magical Saucer for 10k 1k Order Resources (pictured right, image courtesy of @Mononic1).

This toy allows battle pets that are usually grounded to fly alongside you while on your flying mount. Now all of your companions can accompany you on all of your adventures!

We have to wonder, will this toy work with all battle pets? Some companions already have the ability to fly with players, so perhaps the Magical Saucer will just provide those pets with a much needed break.

It's unclear if all classes will be able to use this toy once added to your collection, but we speculate that this will be the case.

We look forward to discovering how this neat toy will interact with different pets.

Pet Battle Dungeon Update
We recently previewed the Wailing Caverns Pet Battle Dungeon, however it's received a small update since then.

All encounters within the scenario are accompanied by two additional enemy pets.

Boss pet team Pet Battle Dungeon
However, this now also includes the "boss" battles (example pictured left) which were previously single pet fights.

Note: The two backline pets do not have the Boss passive.

In addition to this change, all non-boss encounters are now on the same level as your average, everyday wild battle. The enemy pets on these teams no longer have the Elite passive.

We can't wait to hop into the Pet Battle Dungeon, but how about you? Are your pets ready for a new adventure?

Patch 7.2 PTR: Class Pets Price Change and Clarification

March 06, 2017
In response to concerns and feedback regarding the 7.2 Death Knight and Monk class pets, developer Jeremy Feasel noted an upcoming price change and provided some clarification on the future of these pets. [source]

Hi everyone! Thanks for your feedback, wanted to drop in a few updates/notes.

In the next build, you'll see that the required currency for each bonus item has dropped from 10000 to 1000 Order Hall Resources. We agree that the "hard part" of getting the bonus items should be maxing out your artifact, not the grind afterwards.

In 7.2, we want these bonuses to feel like a badge of honor for players that have unlocked the final ability on their empowered artifact. For some time they'll be pretty exclusive, and this is intentional. It makes sense for the Blood Death Knight, with their bloody mount, to also have the Bloodbrood Whelpling, showing off their dedication to their specialization.

It's also important to note that we also have no plans to remove these items in the future, and we will re-evaluate their acquisition in a post-artifact world. If you don't want to go for them right now, don't worry, you won't be permanently missing out on anything.

I hope this assuages some of your concerns. As always, we're looking forward to your continued feedback!

The reduced Order Resource price of the 7.2 class pets is currently not in effect yet on the PTR. We may see the adjustment this week or in the near future.

Emerald Proto-Whelp — Pet of the Month: March 2017

March 21, 2017
Emerald Proto-Whelp - Pet of the Month March 2017

If you're gearing up for the upcoming Pet Battle Dungeon in Patch 7.2, you might want to consider bringing along this little critter. It's a strong battler and will surely be an important asset on your team. This month we're featuring the Emerald Proto-Whelp!

Collecting the Emerald Proto-Whelp
Emerald Proto-Whelp
The Emerald Proto-Whelp is a wild pet that can be found at The Savage Thicket in northern Sholazar Basin, Northrend.

This pet spawns as level 21 to 22, and comes in three breeds (all three are variants of the Power breed).

It should be noted that patience might be necessary to find your very own perfect proto-whelp pet.

The Emerald Proto-Whelp is usually seen near or around its larger (red) proto-drake cousins, but defeating these mobs do not seem to affect the wild pet spawns.

Previously, players could use the custom group finder tool to "hop servers" in an attempt to find proto-whelp spawns, however this isn't as viable now. This method only works if your group leader is also in the same zone (Sholazar Basin) as you are.

Although collecting the Emerald Proto-Whelp can take some time, it's definitely worth the wait. This pet is a battling 'beast' ...but not literally!

Battling with the Emerald Proto-Whelp
The Emerald Proto-Whelp is a versatile battler with really good sustain. Its sustain comes from several defensive abilities, which make up the majority of its kit.

Emerald Proto-Whelp using Ancient Blessing
It has two heals to work with. Ancient Blessing (example pictured left) restores a chunk of health instantly and buffs the entire team with a larger HP pool. Emerald Dream puts the Whelp to sleep for a couple turns and restores HP a bit at a time through those turns. You can select both of these abilities if you’d like, but the other options in those slots are what makes the Emerald Proto-Whelp a good pick.

Sharing the slot with Ancient Blessing is Emerald Presence, a per-hit shield which may prove invaluable against certain encounters. Instead of Emerald Dream you could choose Proto-Strike, which provides a full dodge for one turn and then deals big dragon damage.

You might think the versatility ends there, but the Emerald Proto-Whelp also deals two types of damage, which is excellent in countering different opponent types. Breath and Emerald Bite deal identical damage values otherwise, making this a choice based solely on counters — or maybe on flair.

Battling Discussion on the Emerald Proto-Whelp

Pet of the Month is co-written by Liopleurodon, an experienced pet battler and long-time WoW player. She maintains her own Pet Battle blog and is a Pet Battle columnist on the fansite Blizzard Watch.

Patch 7.2 is Live: 11 New Pets, Pet Battle Dungeon & New Trainers

March 28, 2017
UPDATE: It appears that Lio the Lioness and Serr'ah now both sell Ultimate Battle-Training Stones for 45 Pet Charms.

Patch 7.2 - 11 new pets, Pet Battle Dungeon, New Trainers
Patch 7.2 is live this week! There are new pets to collect, a Pet Battle Dungeon, and new trainers to challenge. [source]

New Pets
Are you ready to do some collecting? 7.2 is bringing 11 new pets!

Blood Whelpling, Frost Whelpling, Unholy Whelpling

  • 2 new pets from the new zone, Broken Shore
  • 3 new pets that have a chance to drop from the Pet Battle Dungeon challenge-mode reward bag
  • An achievement pet for completing the challenge version of the Pet Battle Dungeon
  • 5 new class-exclusive pets — three Death Knight companions (pictured above), one Monk pet, and one Rogue pet

Note that the Death Knight and Monk battle pets will not be available at the start of the patch. Unlocking these pets will require completion of the class mount quests.

It was clarified during the Developer 7.2 Q&A that the class mount quests will only be available after an 11 week campaign new to 7.2, and after you've earned Exalted reputation with Armies of Legionfall.

The Rogue class pet will also be unavailable until three weeks into the patch when the continuation of class campaigns unlocks.

Learn more about all 11 new pets!

It's Not A Pet But...
There's one more class-exclusive pet-related item that deserves an honorable mention. It's not a new pet, but it will certainly give your new pets a 'leg up', so to speak!

Following similar requirements and progression path as Death Knights and Monks, Mages can eventually unlock and purchase the Magical Saucer toy which allows your summoned battle pet to follow you even while you're on a flying mount. You'll never have to leave your pets behind again!

Mystery Inside the Pet Battle Dungeon
Something is amiss in the Wailing Caverns, and level 110 players with at least one level 25 battle pet can head over to Breanni's shop in Dalaran (Broken Isles) to start a new adventure.

Wailing Critters scenario
The follow up quest, Wailing Critters, sends you into a special Pet Battle Dungeon scenario. It only requires one max level pet, however it's recommended to have at least three.

Inside, you'll experience 6 Stages that include 8 standard battles and 3 Boss pet encounters.

For more detailed information on the Wailing Caverns Pet Battle Dungeon, check out our PTR overview.

Pet Battle Dungeon Overview

Turning in Wailing Critters will reward an Ultimate Battle-Training Stone, and unlock a Pet Battle Dungeon weekly quest.

The account-wide weekly quest, Pet Battle Challenge: Wailing Caverns, has the same objectives as its predecessor, however it requires at least 15 max level pets and you cannot heal or revive while inside the scenario.

Note: You do not need to complete the normal version of the Pet Battle Dungeon in order to access the challenge version each week.

Son of Skum
Conquering the challenge version of the Pet Battle Dungeon the first time will award an achievement and Son of Skum (pictured left)! The weekly quest also yields a new reward bag, Damp Pet Supplies, which has a chance to drop 3 new pets.

The conclusion to this short Pet Battle Dungeon quest chain leaves us wondering if there will be more similar content in the future. During the Developer 7.2 Q&A it was mentioned that future pet-dungeons will depend on player feedback and participation.

So are you ready to take on the challenge? Gather up your best battlers and help investigate the mystery inside the Wailing Caverns — your efforts will not go unrewarded!

New Broken Shore Trainers
If the Pet Battle Dungeon isn't enough to satisfy your battling needs, there are 3 new trainers on the Broken Shore.

Broken Shore trainers

These trainers are unlocked as World Quests on the new zone after completing the Broken Shore introductory scenario and quests.

All trainers have three epic level 25 pets each, and their associated World Quest rewards Pet Charms.

At this time, it does not appear that these new trainer encounters will award progress toward Family Familiar.

There's no shortage of activities in Patch 7.2 — what do you plan on tackling first? We certainly hope it's pet-related!
