This little guy is on sale in the Blizzard store for $5, probably just for the week.

Gallatyn, I heard it sugguested that when you are flying you see your "realm", but when you land you are phased into the Cross Realm Zone (More people to party with, less pets available)

 

Saw one today, was on foot so I used my Flying Serpent Kick to get there quickly... stomped on it and killed it :-(

Followed the comments and battled the pets around Strahnbrad, found my showshoe hare as a secondary pet on my second battle.

I waited from 12:30-1:30am server time and didnt see a thing.. came back a couple days later at 6:20am and waited around for aout 10 minutes and finally saw ONE spawn near the top, common quality.  Came back 10 minutes later, ran around a bit, then saw another one spawn near the bottom, poor.  They are lvl 17 and do not have companions.

 

Edit: reading the comments I found out there is more then on cellar (was in the dirt one) ran over to the wine cellar and found 7 out and about at 6:45

I just came across a sand kitten wandering around, so they do exist outside of a secondary wild pet companion.  His partner was also a Sand Kitten. (Near Broken Pillar)

 

Edit: Just came across a second pair of Sand Kittens in the middle of the desert, not 5 minutes after finding the first pair.
