The Zul Gurub snake boss spot was definately a good area. Make sure you have 5 people in group, because that way every critter you kill counts for 5. Classwise I suggest doing it on a warlock with that hellfire-while-running spec or on a rogue, because they don't run out of power as easy as other classes.

I managed to kill about 10k critters every 45 mins in the zg area (in a 5 man group)

One important note: there is a (horde?) quest in this spot that kills everyone there :)

A little persistance pays off. Even though I had the achievement for the pet, I deleted the pet item since I wasn't collecting pets at the time. My first request to have it restored got denied, however the second time round it got restored! So try again a few months later if your request got denied, you might be as lucky as I was :)
